Mount Kailash rises 6,638 metres over the Ngari plateau — sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and the Bon tradition alike, and by shared custom never climbed. Pilgrims do not ascend it; they walk around it. The 52-kilometre Kora circles the mountain in a journey most complete over two to three days, cresting at the 5,630-metre Dolma La among prayer flags and cairns.
Below it lies Lake Manasarovar at 4,590 metres — one of the highest freshwater lakes on earth, where pilgrims bathe and circle the shore before turning toward the mountain. The lakeside monastery of Chiu Gompa watches from a crag on its north-western shore, and the town of Darchen, at the foot of the mountain, is where every circuit of Kailash begins and ends.
The whole journey unfolds above four thousand metres — remote, spectacular, and demanding respect for altitude at every stage. That is the landscape KAK was written for.

Best time to travel
The pilgrimage season runs May to mid-October — the window when the Dolma La stays open and the corridors from Nepal are running.

Why specialized insurance

Plan ceilings matched to the route itself — 4,600 m around Mansarovar, 5,630 m over the Dolma La — with Accidental & AMS Medical Treatment up to USD 3,000.

The route runs distant from complete medical infrastructure. KAK answers with free medical-grade oxygen at Chiu Gompa and Darchen.

Mobile coverage disappears for sections of the journey. The optional Tracer M3 keeps satellite location reporting and one-button SOS available.

Emergency ground transport in remote Tibet is complex to coordinate alone. KAK covers it up to USD 2,000 — with HGN coordinating the response.

Four KAK service points along the pilgrimage — presence on the ground, not just a policy document in your bag.

Documenting an incident alone, days from a city, is not realistic. HGN coordinates on the ground; IGI Prudential Insurance assesses and settles under the issued policy.

Before you compare policies
Coverage varies by insurer — here's where KAK's answer differs from a typical policy, point by point.
Journey Design
Broad, general coverage — not written for this route.
—Purpose-built for the Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage and its approved corridors.
Altitude
Often a low ceiling, or exclusions once you go high.
—4,600 m (Mansarovar) or 5,630 m (Kailash) — matched to the plan.
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
Coverage varies, often unclear until you need it.
—AMS Medical Treatment up to USD 3,000, subject to policy conditions.
Ground Emergency Transport
Usually reimbursement-based — you pay first, claim later.
—Up to USD 2,000, with HGN coordinating the response directly.
Oxygen Support
Not typically an insurance service at all.
—Free medical-grade oxygen at Chiu Gompa and Darchen.
Route Service Points
No presence on the ground — a policy document, nothing more.
—Four KAK service points along the pilgrimage route.
Satellite Device
Not normally bundled or offered.
—Optional Tracer M3 — satellite location and SOS where mobile signal can't reach.
24/7 Response
A global call centre, if one exists at all.
—HGN's own Emergency Response Centre in Kathmandu, staffed around the clock.
Claims Assistance
Varies — often just a claims form and a phone number.
—HGN supports documentation and coordination; IGI Prudential assesses and settles.
This reflects KAK's current design, not a claim that every standard policy lacks these features. Coverage varies by insurer and policy.
